If you haven’t already done so, take these seven simple steps to help to prepare yourself and your home in advance for the effects of an earthquake.
1 Prevent moving furniture and falling objects
Think about the position of your furniture, especially tall furniture like bookshelves and cupboards. Consider adding support bars to fix it to the ceiling or wall. (Support bars can be bought in home centres such as Konan.) Secure TVs and personal computers.
2 Prevent injuries
Think about the direction objects could fall or move in, and make sure nothing can fall on you while you’re asleep. In addition, check whether you store heavy, breakable objects such as glasses on high shelves or in cupboards that can open easily. Secure cupboard doors with rubber bands if necessary.
3 Prepare for power outages
Keep flashlights and slippers in easily accessible places.
Make sure you know where your fire extinguisher is. Fire extinguishers are often located on the outside of apartments and houses. If you bathe every day, don’t empty the bathtub after use.
5 Fire prevention and early detection
Make sure you have a smoke detector installed. Keep electrical devices unplugged when not in use.
6 Prepare emergency supplies
These include drinking water, a portable radio, batteries, a battery-powered portable charger and emergency food.
7 Be aware of your nearest evacuation point
If you live in an apartment, familiarise yourself with emergency exits, and find out your area’s evacuation point.
